Michelle and I both worked for a large printing company for many years, and one day decided to look for a change in direction. Michelle’s parents used to own the village store in Goathland, North Yorkshire, which is where the TV programme Heartbeat was filmed. We’d help out there now and then, and it sowed the seed in our minds about becoming retailers ourselves. And so we bought the store! The site used to be a pub called The Good Intent after a ship, which is how the store got its name. We have six part-time members of staff, who all live in the village as recruiting locally is always what we like to do and it’s so important for staff and customers. Michelle and I live at the store too, so we’re always on hand. What inspired the refit and why did you choose Today’s? For 20 years we’d been with another symbol group and decided we needed a change, to try something different. A family member and several retailers we know are with Today’s and so we spoke with them about their experiences and that reassured us it was the right move, so we decided to go for it. We had a new fascia outside and some new fixtures inside; what we’ve achieved is to modernise the look of the store. Products are laid out slightly differently and we’re stocking some different brands too. Our customers have been positive and they really like it. The store is cleaner and fresher, which is great for customers.
