It could be that they stock the right range, advertise the best promotions or in more extreme cases, they can buy local stores to prevent other stores opening. And Ramandeep Singh, Today’s Express retailer, and his family decided to do all three! To stop other stores opening next to their grocery store, Ramandeep snapped up an empty bring customers inside,” he said. “It was essential that we created a great store with a fantastic grocery range, rather than the cluttered shelves and limited stock that was in the store before.” To deliver a real impact, the family took the store back to basics, making the space work much harder. To ensure he was stocking the right products, Ramandeep used the Plan for Profit core range guidance and has added 100 new lines. More lines, more sales This has had a huge impact on sales. “There wasn’t much variety in the store before, but now we’re using the space to stock the right choice of products. More lines and more choice lead to more sales,” he said. Ramandeep also quickly established that value was the key to his customers’ hearts. “We love the promotions in our wholesaler depot,” he said. “By stocking up on these, we’re passing on brilliant savings to customers, and they love that they’re getting great value deals.” To grab attention, Ramandeep created promotional gondola ends that face the entrance of the store, as well as using in-store signage. Stay ahead ofthepack store and now the family own two stores in the same row on a busy road in Coventry. However, keen to not compete against themselves, the family decided to convert the new store, which couldn’t sell alcohol, to a full grocery offer with a post office, while the existing store would become an off-licence. This, of course, meant double the work as Ramandeep decided to carry out a full refit before opening. “We knew the store needed to be perfect in order to Make sure you shout about your promotions Are you getting the best deals for your customers? We even have customers who live opposite another store that walk to us because we take the time to talk to them. We go the extra mile to get to know our customers and their families and we know we’re demand, so I created a store, with the Lifestyle Express team, to make the most of these areas. We created a huge area for chilled and frozen to really make the most of these sales, and made sure that we made the most of all the space available to drive profitability. This has really paid off during lockdown as customers bought more chilled and frozen food. By stocking a great range of products, we saw sales increase by 30% and we’ve held onto ‘Some customers rely on us as their only formof human contact sowe take the time to chat and ask how they are’ a big part of their daily life.
