Deposit Return Scheme
The Deposit Return Scheme is a government-backed recycling initiative, which is designed to increase the incentive of single-use plastics. By implementing a proper scheme with financial benefits and clear guidance, the pathway to a greener future through thoughtful recycling has never been clearer.
The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) will be launched on October 1st, 2027.
How do deposit return schemes work in the UK?
The scheme works by placing a deposit on drinks containers when purchased, this is then refunded when the customer returns the container after use. This can be done via a reverse vending machine or through the help of a participating retailer.
The mandatory flat rate of 20p is applied to qualifying drinks containers, encouraging the recycling of these items and reducing unnecessary waste.

Reverse Vending Machines
Reverse vending machines are used to automate the collection and sorting of used drink containers, making compliance with 2027's Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) much easier for retailers. The machines remove the need for a manual return point whilst making customers' lives much easier with a simple return process.
